Crospovidone XL

Crospovidone XL, a cross-linked homopolymer of N-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone, is a white to off-white powder virtually insoluble in water and organic solvents. Renowned as a “super disintegrant” in pharmaceuticals, it exhibits high water absorption and swelling capacity, enabling rapid tablet disintegration across direct compression, dry, and wet granulation processes. It also enhances tablet hardness, reduces friability, aids in solubilizing poorly soluble drugs via co-evaporation, and finds applications in food processing as a filter aid.

Highly Efficient Disintegration Performance
As a super disintegrant, Crospovidone XL possesses rapid capillary activity and strong hydration capacity. When tablets come into contact with water or body fluids, it quickly absorbs moisture and swells, with a swelling coefficient of 2.25-2.30, promoting rapid tablet disintegration. Compared to traditional disintegrants, under the same dosage, tablets using Crospovidone XL show a 30%-50% faster disintegration rate, significantly improving drug release efficiency.
Unique Microstructure
Its powder particles have a porous microstructure with a large specific surface area. This structural feature not only allows it to absorb water quickly but also enables full contact with active pharmaceutical ingredients, enhancing the dissolution-promoting effect on poorly soluble drugs. For example, after adding Crospovidone XL to some poorly soluble drug formulations, the drug dissolution rate within 15 minutes can be increased from the original 20%-30% to 50%-60%.
No Gel Formation
During the disintegration process, Crospovidone XL does not form a gel like some disintegrants, thus avoiding the problem of delayed disintegration or drug dissolution caused by gel blocking water from entering the tablet interior. For example, in the preparation of azithromycin dispersible tablets, the addition of Crospovidone XL greatly improves the uniformity, dissolution rate, appearance, and hardness of the tablets.

  • Dissolution Promoter
    Using co-evaporation technology, poorly soluble drugs are first adsorbed on Crospovidone XL, and then the solvent is evaporated, which can effectively increase drug solubility and improve dissolution rate. Taking a poorly soluble antidepressant drug as an example, after using this technology, the drug dissolution rate increased by approximately 40%.
